Two week California/New York itinery.

My wife and I are planning our 1st American holiday and wondered what everyone thinks of our itinery?

3 NIGHTS New York flying from MAN

3 nights San Francisco

2 Nights Monterey area

3 nights on drive down Pacific coast Highway finishing with 3 nights in Santa Monica, FLYING HOME FROM LAX.

Car hire at end of SF stay to end of Hols.

Any suggestions on Hotels, car hire and attractions to visit would be most appreciated.

My wife and I are both so excited by this holiday and look forward to soaking up everything, particularly the weather, sea and food.

Thanks in advance from a totally ignorant Brit.

Two week California/New York itinery.

I wouldn%26#39;t try to fit in a trip to NYC when visiting California. You%26#39;ll want those 3 nights in California. But if you%26#39;re set on NYC, then it looks fine.

Regarding hotels, what%26#39;s your budget per night?

frasier-crane asked «what everyone thinks of our itinery?»

I can%26#39;t speak for everyone but I think your itinerary is not only unrealistic, it%26#39;s downright daft!

«3 NIGHTS New York»

Why bother?

«3 nights San Francisco»

Why bother?

«2 Nights Monterey area»

That%26#39;s OK. Eat at Monterey%26#39;s Fish House!

«3 nights on drive down Pacific coast Highway»

The PCH is about two hundred miles South of Monterey. You may tarry as much as you like but one overnight %26#39;tween Monterey and Santa Monica is enough.

«3 nights in Santa Monica, FLYING HOME FROM LAX.»

That%26#39;s OK.

«Car hire at end of SF stay»

Correct thing to do.

«My wife and I are both so excited by this holiday and look forward to soaking up everything»

Your itinerary is so daft that you won%26#39;t be able to soak up anything but others%26#39; sweat from previously used seats.

«Thanks in advance from a totally ignorant Brit.»

It shows. Get a map or few!

It appears you have eleven days. Spend eight of them in San Francisco and three getting to the airport in Westminster.

Or all of %26#39;em in Manhattan.

Thx for honest replies so far, might dump NYC and do as much as we can in Cal for my two weeks.

Budget for Hotels is up to $250 per room per night.

Cheers.

Well, usually I think it is silly to run around to a lot of different cities but I don%26#39;t think your original idea is SOOO terrible. It might help with getting used to the time difference to break it up as you originally thought. It would certainly help if you had a couple of extra days in NYC and SanFrancisco.

IF this is your first trip to the USA then perhaps you should concentrate on one coast.

Yes and consider the hours lost while flying back and forth. It shortens your time in each place considerably.

I agree with Riffsmom %26amp; Puter. I don%26#39;t know why you want to see NYC but I%26#39;m not much of a big city person so 3 night in either NYC or SF would be sufficient for me. I much prefer more natural landscapes. You may want to adjust your itinerary based upon your preferences. Agree on renting a car on your way out of SF. You don%26#39;t need a car in NYC or SF. If you are big fan of coastal scenery 3 days would be fine. YOu may want to spend a day hiking in Big Sur, and then a day exploring Hearst Castle, Cambria area, then part of a day in Santa Barbara.

If you take out the days in NYC and make the coastal drive in two versus 3 days you could fit in a side trip to Wine Country (Napa or Sonoma Valley) or take a side trip to Yosemite.

South of Carmel Pt.Lobos State Reserve is a must see. Monterey Aquarium, Pacific Grove and Carmel are worth seeing too. Carmel Mission, Santa Barbara Mission are possible on your current route (you might want to see one mission).

As an XNYrker, I have to say that there%26#39;s lots to see and do in NYC . I know that many folks from the UK go there now for long weekends to shop because of the tons of well priced flights and pound vs. dollar. IF you think of California as a destination for a long holiday(because of the distance) and NYC as a destination for a shorter holiday(because it is closer)then you may be able to fit in 2 trips at 2 different times.

hi

we have done the fly into one visit for a few days then have the rest of the holiday elsewhere a number of times 9dallas chicago miami new york...)

san fran is great, so is san diego but new york is new york!! just different class - dont miss it

personally i think the best place in california is yosemite so id spens the other 10 days between san fran carmel and yosemite (but if you do decide to go there it books up very early....)

make sur you do 17 mile drive in carmel

next year do la san diego and las vegas

if you do decide to drive the coast this year san luis obsipo and santa barbara are worht a visit

I think after all this advice and some thought that we%26#39;ll do NY in sept (5 nights) and see Cal next year and do plenty of research to make sure we do things right.

Thx for all the replies.
