I will be in Los Angeles for 4 days in March. I am staying at the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel and I will be using public transportation to get around. This is the itinerary that I have put together but I am hoping some kind LA experts will let me know if I have time to fit in the actvities planned each day. Please give me any suggestions or tips. I have never been to LA before and I want to maximize the time I have. Thank you! :)
Day 1:
Hollywood tours- Hop On Hop Off or a couple of the Starline tours
Day 2:
Getty Museum
Paley Centre
Day 3:
Griffith Park
Studio tour (Warners, NBC, Sony, Paramount or Fox)
Day 4:
Santa Monica
Venice Beach
Does My Itinerary Make Sense?
As the Los Angeles Expert on Public Transportation here(and lone defender, lol), here is my input...
Day 1 Hop on Off tour is ok if you are fine with waiting for the bus to pick you up every 40/50 minutes. You can do the same tour, visit Beverly Hills/The Grove e.t.c. by an mta bus that comes more frequently
To get an overall taste of the city, plus a narrated tour, the Hop on/off is a really good option
Day 2
To get to the Getty it takes about an hour each way
on the bus
Metro Bus 2 (SUNSET-P.C.H.) heading west
From: SUNSET BL/HIGHLAND AV(NE corner)
To: CHURCH/SAN DIEGO FWY EXIT(NW corner) Ride Metro Rapid 761 ( PACOIMA) heading north
From: CHURCH LA/405 FRWY EXIT(NE corner)
To: SEPULVEDA BLVD/GETTY CENTER DR(SE corner)
Day 3
There is no public transportation weekdays up to the Griffith Observatory so you would have to take a taxi from the Sunset/Western Station up the hill
Skip Nbc tour, not worth it. Warner Brothers has a great tour, you can take the #163 bus directly from Hollywood and Highland to the tour(always check on the schedule at www.metro.net so you dont have to wait to long at the stop)
Day 4
Easy one, take either the # 212 or #217 from Hollywood and Highland to Santa Monica Blvd. From there get on the # 704 NOT the # 4 going west all the way to third street promenade. It will take about an hour each way but drives you thru West Hollywood/Beverly Hills so it is a nice drive
With all the driving on the bus/subway you will do, considering to either get a daypass(you can get from the busdriver) for $5 which will let you drive any bus/subway as long as you want or even get a weekly pass that is $ 17 that you can get from the various cash chacking places in the area(one is open 24 hours on Hollywood and Whitley) That way you have your pass and just hop on any subway and bus you see and explore the city to the fullest
Does My Itinerary Make Sense?
Day 1: I agree. No need for tours. You%26#39;ll basically explore Hollywood, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills, which are all easily done by public bus. Buses go in straight lines down major streets for the most part. And a very convenient for you bus #217 goes from your hotel west on Hollywood Blvd and turns south on Fairfax Ave. Pick the specific things you want to do in those neighborhoods and map the routes via www.mta.net. Hollywood area is right outside your hotel, so you can explore that whenever you have 1-2 hrs free.
Day 2: It will take 3 buses to get to the Getty, which is not very convenient. But if you don%26#39;t mind the commute, it%26#39;s doable in about an hour. See the above site for the bus route once again. Have lunch at the Getty. You may want to explore Westwood on the way back since you%26#39;ll have to switch buses there I believe. Also, consider taking a bus that goes down Sunset Blvd through Beverly Hills and Sunset Strip on the way back to Hollywood. Scenic drive and also passes some major sites on Sunset Strip. You can walk a few blocks to Hollywood Blvd from Sunset once you get to Highland Ave.
Day 3: Griffith Park will take you a while to get to by bus. Check the above site. Are you planning on going to the observatory or for another reason? You may want to consider exploring Downtown LA that day too. Paramount Pictures is closest to your hotel.
Day 4: Looks good. Factor in an hour to get there and back via 2 buses.
