My husband, myself and our daughter are coming to town next weekend. As travelers of a very tight budget, we placed an ad on Craigslist requesting an apartment or room for rent for the weekend for under $100 a day.
I received an e-mail offering lodging at a very nice rate. The lodging is an apartment in the Silver Terrace neighborhood. I know that it isn%26#39;t anywhere near the ';touristy'; areas, but that wasn%26#39;t really a concern for us. We really wanted to enjoy being in the city and ';away from it all';.
Could any of the locals be kind enough to tell me a little about this neighborhood, about any local eateries, markets or small parks in the vicinity?
We do plan to head for Union Square on only one day of our trip, and the person that we plan to rent from explained that the ';T'; line is very close by, and we should be able to get over toward Union Square using that train.
So, I was just curious about the area. Any information that could be given about it would be most welcome.
Thanks!
Please tell me a little about this area....
Silver Terrace is near San Bruno Ave/Bayshore/Silver Ave, right? If so, I%26#39;m not a fan of this neighborhood and I really think it might be a bad idea to base yourself out of.
Most would agree that Bayview is of the highest crime neighborhoods in the city, and Silver Terrace I believe may not be in the center of the action, but it%26#39;s not too far away. On the stretch of Silver, there are some shops and restaurants but nothing much of interest- a very dreary neighborhood. Bayshore has a lot of warehouses. The T-Third line goes through some rough areas as well.
Instead of putting out an email request, you%26#39;re better off checking www.vrbo.com or looking at the temp housing postings already listed on Craigslist. There are much nicer neighborhoods in your price range, I%26#39;m sure of it. Even the Sunset or Richmond Districts are better connected and nicer.
Please tell me a little about this area....
Thank you for your forthrightness. You just saved us a very unpleasant trip. If had we gone with renting that apartment, I%26#39;m sure that things wouldn%26#39;t have gone as well.
We have reservations now at Hotel Bijou as a backup in case I can%26#39;t win a decent rate on Priceline, which I plan to bid on Thursday. I know that we really wanted to avoid most of the ';touristy'; stuff on our trip, but we%26#39;ve come to the realization that we need everything as close by as possible especially with having to push our five month old everywhere in her stroller.
Thanks for your advice.
I agree with Bellagreen. Silver Terrace is a development with nicer homes located at the top of the hill above a district that is not the best.
Have you checked out the Stanyon Park Hotel for rates? My friend always stays here when visiting San Francisco because of their reasonable rates and location next to Golden Gate Park. There are also a couple of B%26amp;B in San Francisco%26#39;s Sunset %26amp; Richmond district as well.
I also found a past TripAdvisor thread re: neighborhood hotels %26amp; bed and breakfast locations below. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60713-i30-k157573鈥?/a>
Good luck.
Oh good! I%26#39;m so glad you found other options within your budget. I was actually a little worried about you last night- I did a quick google search on the location of Silver Terrace after I wrote my reply and results made me more nervious...
I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll be happier being close to downtown and all the sights, it%26#39;s such a time saver anyway. Hope you have a fun trip!
We%26#39;re still looking. Since we have a reservation that we can cancel if we find something more appealing and/or Priceline turns up a diamond within our budget.
Thanks for all the help.
Do not stay in Silver Terrace !!!!!!!!
alot of good people live in that area, but at night, it turns into a whole %26#39;nother animal.
gam - I know the area. It is not the best place for a visitor, because public transportation across the City can be incredibly slow, and all of the sights that you would want to see are fairly far from there. You will not get the San Francisco experience of walking out of the door into the City life. As stated, some of the area is fairly quiet and residential; but if the renter says it is ';close to the T-line'; then probably it is part of the neighborhood I would not recommend for a visitor even SEE. Do look at some of the motels along Lombard St., you will probably find something in your price range.
Silver Terrace ? No,No,No
Check this site for Priceline bidding. You should do well in Union Square East, 4 star %26lt;$100. Tips and strategy on the site, along with a list of hotels and recent winning bids. Good luck!

You might even be able to get a little suite at the Columbus Motor Lodge or Hotel Fusion at this time of year.
