Australians- driving in US- licence requirements?

Hi, I%26#39;m not an Aussie (lol!), but as far as I know, you do not need an International Drivers License here, only your valid license from your home country. Many years ago, before computers, some countries did require them. To make absolutely sure, contact your car rental companies and/or check their websites - they should mention it in their FAQ section. Have a good holiday :-)

I dont know that it is compulsory but I have been told that it is always advisable to have an International Drivers Licence as if you are pulled over and need to show your licence an International one is a lot more widely recognised. If you only have your Aussie one it may take a little longer to be on your way!

I think it is more a precaution than a have to have.

I%26#39;ve been several times and used my UK licence, never required an International Licence.

Although it%26#39;s not California, I%26#39;ve use my Australian liscence twice (05 %26amp; 07) in Hawaii with no problems. We are going to California in October and will do the same.

An International Drivers licence is not an official document though it can be handy sometimes if you drive in no english speaking countries. But there%26#39;s no law that requires it and you don%26#39;t need it in the USA. We have been on dozens of trips to both the USA and Australia and never been asked for one. Even not by policeofficers while my drivers licence is in Dutch.

Tet

I have a california and german driver license, once on my trip to Vegas i forgot my california one and was speeding(i know) in Nevada and got pulled over. Showed my german license and it was not a problem at all(and yes, i paid my fine, lol)

So you should be ok with your australien license

Ok, there%26#39;s a little bit of accuracy to what%26#39;s been posted and a lot of misinformation, so let%26#39;s clear this up:

1. You do NOT need an International Driver%26#39;s LICENSE since that is required of individuals who are spending EXTENDED periods of time in a foreign country. Such a document grants you THE RIGHT TO DRIVE -- it is, in fact, a license.

2. You ARE required to have an International Driver%26#39;s PERMIT which is not a license at all. It is simply a summary of your pertinent information (name, address, etc) IN ENGLISH as well as in a number of other international languages to assist law enforcement agencies (and others) to understand your information in the case of an emergency.

While you are technically required to have this permit, since you Aussies speak almost the same language as we do, it%26#39;s unlikely that any U.S. official would have any difficulty understanding the information on your personal Driver%26#39;s License.

So, technically, yes, you are required to have the PERMIT but no, it%26#39;s not necessary since your documents are in English.
