Where else to go after a week in San Francisco

Me and my girlfriend intend to go to San Francisco in September, probably staying for between 5 to 7 days. We also want to spend a further week visiting 1 or 2 other places. We had thought about Yosemite but are not sure how to get there from SF. We don%26#39;t want to drive or fly while we are in the US. We did travel between Boston and Washington via Amtrak last year but I understand it%26#39;s not so easy on the other side!

Is Yosemite a good idea? Or is there anywhere else within easy travelling distance of SF?

Any tips would be appreciated. Last year was our first time in the US and it was briliant.

Yes, Yosemite is a great idea, and Sept. is a wonderful time to go. You can either sign up with a tour company from SF to get you there, or you can take Amtrak. The train gets you as far as Merced, then a YARTS bus takes you the rest of the way. While in Yosemite, you can take the free shuttles to get you around the valley, and sign up for the Grand Tour to get you to some other spots you will want to see, including the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, and Glacier Point. You can rely on foot power to get you to other areas in the park.

There really isn%26#39;t anywhere else like Yosemite- don%26#39;t come this far and then miss it.

I agree Yosemite is a must, unless you a big hiker or rock climber, probably 3 days there is enough.

Driving there isn%26#39;t very difficult. There aren%26#39;t very many turns, not very confusing to find. The roads are very well marked, mostly flat and straight until you get with 20 miles or so. It%26#39;s about a 4 hr drive almost directly east from the bay area. Look on Google maps, type in ';Yosemite, ca'; zoom out and you can see exactly where it is in relation to SF.

Yosemite would be nice in September.

You might also consider Tahoe. You can take the train to Truckee. It is a spectacular ride. If you choose you can even stop in Sacramento and stay in Old Town (I met an Irish couple doing this last summer). In Truckee you can get transportation (bus) to Tahoe City, Kings Beach or Incline. Tahoe City has the best restaurant/bar scene. It isn%26#39;t crowded and very affordable in September. Many restaurants offering 2 for 1 on weekdays. If you are really keen, you can even take the train to Reno.

The lake after labor day is empty and still warm and beautiful.

Go to Yosemite we were there the end of June and it is so beautiful you just have to see it.

If you go remember to look behind you also, because what%26#39;s behind you is just as beautiful as what is in front of you.

Do you havae a place to stay in S.F.? We stayed at The Columbus Motor Inn and really liked it.

Have a wonderful trip.
