Hi, I%26#39;m thinking of doing a CA trip with my 13 year old son in July. I%26#39;m thinking starting in San Fran and then driving to LA. He%26#39;s a huge sports fan so we would definitly catch a Giants game in SF and maybe a LA Galaxy game in LA if they are playing.
I want to do Alcatraz and the wharf but now sure what else. How long is the drive, I would think we would maybe stop one night enroute somewhere. Any ideas or itineries would be appreciated. Last year we did Philadelphia with a Phillies Mets game and the year before we did Camden yards in Baltimore. It%26#39;s our annual trip and we both look forward to it.

mom - You may also want to check the schedule for the Oakland As. The Coliseum is easy to get to on BART (see www.bart.gov)and the ballpark is nice. Also, if he likes science, do visit the Exploratorium, a hands on science museum.

I have a baseball trip mapped out in case my daughter%26#39;s summer plans fall through. If you%26#39;re planning on being here after the All Star break, you could go to a Giants game one day (after you%26#39;ve done all your San Francisco sightseeing), then catch a game in Oakland. Drive down the coast, then see the Dodgers and the Padres. And don%26#39;t laugh at the Padres--you can get tickets to the park outside the ball field for only $5, then wander in later when they stop watching the gates:) I have this planned with games on July 24, 25, 29 and 30.
I%26#39;d break up a two day drive by going to Hearst Castle and staying close by, then driving to Santa Barbara for another overnight. From there to LA can be a 2 hour drive without traffic.
And not that you asked, but you%26#39;re a great mom for planning these trips!

We are visiting San Francisco for 3 days in June with a 12 y.o. and 14 y.o. One of the things we are doing is renting bikes from Bay City Bikes and biking across the golden gate bridge. We are continuing into Sausalito, stopping for lunch, then taking the ferry back to fisherman%26#39;s wharf. I have been planning our whole trip, LA to San Fran, based on all of the info on trip advisor. The search feature is fantastic!
S.F. is perfect for kids of all ages. He would probably enjoy Exploritorium. It is in the Marina and a nice place for you as well. Our kids like the museums (MOMA and De Yong) , the California Academy of Sciences, Giants games, the farmers market, walking on the bridge, the Marin headlands (a must!). Restaurants and shops on Chestnut near Exploratorium are nice.
If you are driving to L.A. don%26#39;t forget to stop in Monterey. The Aquarium is a full day. If you check ahead of time, he might be able to do one of the diving or kayaking trips. Stay at Asilomar in Monterey. It is perfect for kids and adults, because they meet other kids. Restful, rustic and well maintained. You can walk to the nearby tide pools, use the pool, and view local wildlife (otters, deer, racoons etc.)
My fellow posters will get tired of my saying it, but if your son%26#39;s an anime fan, he%26#39;ll love a trip to Japantown. My kids were impressed with the little shops that sell anime figures and accessories. They still talk about it and wish aloud to go back as soon as possible!
