1 day car hire - return late evening

My husband and I are planning to do one or two day trips out of SF when we visit in the summer and I recall reading a post a while ago on this forum which mentioned that the poster hired their car from a particular company for a day trip as their offices were open late (or 24 hours, can%26#39;t quite remember) enabling them to return the car at 10 pm.

Have tried searching for this post with no luck, so I would be grateful if anyone know which company this would be.

In my experience, it will depend on the individual shop%26#39;s ability to accept night or Sunday returns, not necessarily company policy. E.g., I%26#39;ve rented from one Hertz shop in San Francisco that was a few doors from a 24/7 parking garage. Late returns could park there and drop the keys in a secure box. I%26#39;ve also rented from another Hertz shop in the area that had no such facilities and could not accept late returns.

Best bet when you make the rental is to telephone the shop directly and ask.

Oops, you%26#39;re in Sydney, so maybe telephoning isn%26#39;t the best option. However, I believe the websites for the rental car companies typically include the operating hours of the individual franchise you will deal with, and whether or not they accept returns when they are closed. Email ought to work, too.

Some of the hotels that have rental car desks in the lobby offer after hours drop off for that particular agency. Hertz on Mason Street offers 10pm returns and Enterprise Car Rental on Van Ness Avenue offers 24 hour returns. There is nothing on the website about that, but it is available. Just ask them when you pick up the car and they will show you how to do after hour returns.
