19 of us traveling to San Diego the end of Feb to board a cruise ship. Staying at a hotel close to the pier. We will be celebrating a 50th birthday the night before we board.
I am asking for recommendations for a Mexican Restaurant close by, where we can enjoy some great food and have some Birthday Fun, Cervezas etc.....
thanks for your help.

Suggestion for Mexican Restaurant in San DiegoGreat food? How about good and LOTS of fun? Try Rockin%26#39; Baja Lobster in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Other than that I%26#39;d head down to Old Town and try the places down there.... that is a lot of cabs thorugh!
Suggestion for Mexican Restaurant in San DiegoSince Casa di Bandini and Casa de Pico left Old Town a couple years ago, it seems the favorite authentic Mexican restaurants in Old Town are El Agave or Casa Guadalajara. You can catch the light-rail trolley from nearby your hotel (depending on which one you%26#39;re staying at) to Old Town.
In the Gaslamp, I walked past Candelas this weekend, it looked interesting, but I haven%26#39;t tried it. You could walk there from your hotel, so that might be the easiest for that many people.

Chissis, Candelas is excellent, I suspect you would really enjoy it. But it is not border Mex-food, this is relatively serious cuisine -- more like Blue Point. So I don%26#39;t think it would work for this group%26#39;s needs.
I wish the old Hotel Bar was still around. That was a great hoot and holler birthday party place. I had a birthday there, went through tons of poppers (drinks). My mariachi birthday picture was signed by about 80 people -- it went all over the restaurant. Great place.
Chuey%26#39;s in Barrio Logan might work.
I think El Agave is too %26#39;nice%26#39; for a group this big.
Casa Guadalajara is probably good -- its in Old Town.
Well, if gringo Mexican food works for you then how about ';Fred%26#39;s'; in the Gaslamp? Fun place, will work well for a 50th birthday party...and really pretty decent food.
Old Town Mexican Cafe (in Old Town,) can accomodate a large group. I think their food is good, and it%26#39;s a fun, casual atmosphere. It%26#39;s locally owned, not a chain restaurant.
I second the Old Town Mexican Cafe choice, it%26#39;s still one of my favorite places. After you finish eating and drinking there you can head around to other places, it%26#39;s a fun area.
All I can say is that I hope Oldtown Mexican Cafe is back to its old standards from before it changed hands because last summer it was just terrible. I was embarrassed when I took family there who had read about it in a magazine. Noone could eat their food.
With respect to Old Town Mexican, I%26#39;m with riffsmom -- I think it is horribly overrated. Can it handle a big group -- for sure. But who would want to go?
Mexican food is such a personal thing here in San Diego, and commenting on it is a landmine, to be sure. If you read the Tripadvisor reviews, it%26#39;s true that opinions are divergent on this restaurant, however, opinions differ on most other Mexican restaurants, as well. Some that are popular are not my favorites. Anyway, I maintain that if you order carnitas and a margarita, you%26#39;ll be just fine at OTMC.
I second the ';no'; to Old Town Cafe. The food was horrible last time I was there. Fred%26#39;s across the street was MUCH better and had a more fun atmosphere.
