San Francisco-Synagouge near a hotel

I got a call from a friend in Israel who is going to visit San Francisco. Is anyone aware of hotels in walking distance of a synagouge. In addition anyone aware of any kosher resturaunts near the same location.

Thanks for any and all help,

Ronn

Well, it sort of depends on how religious your friend is, and what type of temple he/she is looking for. Though I%26#39;m guessing if he or she is Kosher, probably Orthodox. The Chabad website will help with synagogues and restaurants (latter of which there are very few):

Your friend may also be interested in a tour or visit to Temple Emanu-El, the oldest standing synagogue on the west coast.

And the new Jewish museum will be open in June.

by the way, seeing as you%26#39;re from Oakland- there are actually more Kosher restaurants in Oakland than in SF. Holy Land is especially great.

shadow - If would help to know if your friend wants an Orthodox synagogue or not.

They would prefer orthodox or conservative, but the main thing they want is a hotel that is in walking distance of a synagouge. In terms of food, a kosher resturant is of secondary importance, they can always by food to keep in the room.

Thanks,

Ronn

This appears to be the only one anywhere near downtown, Congregation Keneseth Israel.

Most of the synagogues in S.F. are in residential areas like the Richmond, Sunset, or Parkside, not near major hotels. I grew up among a number of them in the Richmond. The other one relatively near downtown is Congregation Sherith Israel at California and Webster, and if I%26#39;m not mistaken, it%26#39;s Reform.

This is almost a mile from Van Ness Avenue, and a couple miles from Union Square where most of the hotels are that the typical visitor is looking for. There are kosher restaurants in the Richmond and Sunset, which are residential neighborhoods in the western part of the City.

Sorry to keep posting on this thread, but I think this site has better listings than the one I originally gave you:

Keneseth Israel is the only synagogue downtown, and it%26#39;s Orthodox. It%26#39;s within walking distance from plenty of hotels and Union Square/downtown would be easiest for sightseeing anyway. Found their website for you. It%26#39;s on Sutter at Leavenworth.

I%26#39;m sure someone else here can recommend a hotel near Union Square, or a little closer to the synagogue.

Looks like the Commodore Hotel on Sutter Street is close by the Sutter and Leavenworth streets synagogue, as well as the Hotel Carlton (a Joie de Vivre hotel), Beresford Arms and the York. All boutique hotels.

Thanks very much for your posts, This is quite helpful, looks like there are a couple of good options. I very much appreciates everyones time and effort in locating these resources.
