My college buddies and I have decided to have one last trip before I leave for the Active Army. We%26#39;re going to Yosemite this weekend (Presidents day). As college students we are planning on finding a cheap (free) place to sleep in my Truck. Can we expect to find places to pull off and sleep that weekend in/around Yosemite? I%26#39;ve never been there, and have always wanted to go. We%26#39;re going to take snowshoes and maybe our XC skis and just see the park for a weekend. Any suggestions on where to pull off, or where to go when we get there? We%26#39;re coming from Reno.
Car Camping This weekend
Just a heads up, you cannot camp off the road inside the park boundaries. It%26#39;s illegal. You could I believe stay in Camp 4 which is a ';walk in'; campground in Yosemite Valley. Walk in meaning less than a block to the campsites. But you can%26#39;t put your car directly in the site. It%26#39;s not free, but $5 a person isn%26#39;t bad. First come first serve.
For cross country skiing/snowshoeing, your best bet will probably be up out of Badger Pass, the downhill ski area. There are a lot of cross country possibilities up in that direction.
Yosemite Valley where a lot of the good sightseeing is right now isn%26#39;t ideal for cross country skiing/snowshoeing, but there%26#39;s a lot you can do just walking (and probably even a bit of hiking).
Car Camping This weekend
Stanislaus National Forest is adjacent to Yosemite on Highway 120 and you are allowed to car camp there. There are some campgrounds along highway 120 and on Evergreen Road.
You might also try snowshoeing at Crane Flat, heading to the Tuolumne Grove of Big Trees.
Our temperatures the last few days have been in the 60%26#39;s, almost 70 yesterday (at 3,000 feet) and we expect the same for the next week. So it will be just lovely!
Have a great trip
