Hi all
I am spending one night in LA in March - Im flying into LAX and then leaving from LAX the following day.
Can any one recommend an area I should be looking to stay in for one night - where we can have a look around the shops and there are some decent bars and restaurants in the same area.
Just a fleeting visit this time - or can someone recommend something we should do we have an afternoon, evening and then the follwing day before we fly home at 7 in the evening.
Cheers

Stay in Santa Monica -- 20 minutes north of LAX. Hotels are here:

Info about Santa Monica (and other areas) is in our FAQs section (look under NEIGHBORHOODS as well as ITINERARY IDEAS).
Here%26#39;s a link to the FAQs (which are at the top of the TOPIC LIST):

Definitely Santa Monica, no question about it.
What%26#39;s your budget for the hotel that night?
Another vote for Santa Monica. Please give us your hotel budget per night.
Also, if you can rent a car, it would make it a lot easier to go to see some of central LA sights. Otherwise, I would advise to just stick to the west side for such a short amount of time.
In terms of bars, there are a bunch of hotel bars and some sports bars in downtown SM, or you can take a 5 min cab to Main St for a couple blocks of bars.
I would agree that for what you are looking for Santa Monica fits the bill just perfectly.
You have third street promenade for shops and a couple of bars, mainstreeet for more bars and some funky shops.
During the day you can visit the pier, maybe have lunch at the Lobster (right by the pier) and enjoy the scenic views
If it is a nice day out, you could also walk towards Venice Beach and check out that area(you could also take the Tide shuttle bus from the pier that arrives every 15 minutes and is only 25 cents for the 5 minute ride)
Thanks everyone, Santa Monica it is then.
I have no idea of budget - looking for a semi-decent hotel hoping to be out most of the time so won%26#39;t need anything fabulous just something nice.
Cheers
Simple accomodations can be found at Travelodge for around $150. A nice 3-4 star is around $250 like Loew%26#39;s and Fairmont. You can also bid on Priceline and get the same 3-4 star for under $150. Just read www.biddingfortravel.com first to see what others have recently won and for how much in that area.
