When to do Hearst Castle?

Hi, hoping for a bit of advice about Hearst Castle.

We will be staying in SF for a few days and plan to leave about 1pm to head to Monterey. This will give us the late afternoon and evening to check things out and also the following morning. We plan to leave Monterey about 11am and take our time heading down Highway 1 through Big Sur. We will be staying in Cambria the following evening.

Should we book a late tour of Hearst Castle for the same day as we leave Monterey or should we go the morning after having stayed in Cambria. This would of course mean retracing our steps a little.

After Cambria we are heading to Santa Barbara via Solvang and maybe SLO and a vineyard.

Thanks

When to do Hearst Castle?

Hi

Having same dilemma as you!We are heading to Cambria from Carmel. We would have liked to have done the evening tour but it stops after May.After much deliberation think we will do it before we reach Cambria so as not to double back.We will prob book tour as late as poss so we can take our time and enjoy scenery en-route.When do you go?We go beg Aug so if you are there before us you can maybe let us know how you get on?After Cambria we head to LA then flying to Vegas and finally New York.Think we will need a holiday to get over it!

I still recommend, as I did to your question on the other forum, that you make a reservation for the first tour in the morning after your stay in Cambria so that you won%26#39;t be hassled about time on the lovely trip through Big Sur.

The ';doubling back'; is only a matter of 8 measly miles between Cambria and San Simeon.

It really would be worth it.

Absolutely agreed - you do not want to rush through Big Sur, which, in my opinion, is the best part of that route. It%26#39;s no more than 15 minutes from Cambria back up to Hearst Castle the next morning.
