We are scheduled to be in SF the first week in August. How crowded can we expect the attractions, cable cars to be? Is this the height of tourist season in SF? I have read on some posts that waits for the cable cars can be longer than an hour at times. While we%26#39;re staying at the Chancellor and know we can take buses, the F line or even walk, we want to see and experience as much as we can but don%26#39;t want to be overwhelmed and disappointed by huge crowds.

Yes, it will be the height of tourist season. You will find crowds everywhere and all the visitor attractions will be busy.
The cable cars run from about 6:00 a.m. to almost 1:00 a.m. If you want to ride them for pleasure, rather than to get somewhere specific, you might try the evening, after around 5:30-6:00 p.m. Also, the California St. cable cars are not as busy.
Other public transit goes to the Wharf, North Beach, etc. As for some of the other sights, you might find thinner crowds if you can go on weekdays.
If you want to go to Alcatraz, you must reserve ahead of time or you won%26#39;t get a seat on the boat.

Did you have an ant farm as a kid? You know, the kind where you can see the poor ants building their endless criss-crossing tunnels to nowhere? And did you ever, even just once, take the whole thing and shake it around as hard as you could, destroying their days/weeks/months of labor? Remember the chaos and panic of those normally organized ants?
Well, that%26#39;s what the tourist districts feel like in August. If you need some breathing space, try the financial district at night. It%26#39;s a ghost town after the parade of Lexuses (Lexi?) and Acuras (Acurae?) head out for points north.
