Two mature women flying into San Jose Airport on Saturday and spending two nights in Monterey. We plan on seeing Monterey, Carmel by the Sea and the Hearst Castle before driving to San Francisco on Tuesday and flying out of San Francisco Airport on Saturday.
We%26#39;re not sure if we should go to the Hearst Castle on Monday and get a room in that area Monday night and then drive to SF Tuesday morning or if we should go to Hearst Castle on Sunday, return to our hotel in Monterey and spend Monday around Carmel and start driving to SF on Monday and find a hotel along the way. We plan on returning our rental car when we get to SF. Are there any areas in the city that aren%26#39;t safe for two women traveling alone?

First, the distance between Monterrey/Carmel and SF is not very far. You can drive it within a few hours, but be careful about your arrival time in SF because of the rush hour traffic.
Similar to NYC, SF has some very bad parts of town. However, in SF, it is easy to stumble over them to get to some attractions. In general, you would want to stay away from the Civic Center and Tenderloin areas. (This is where the wonderful Asian Art Museum and Opera House are, so if you want to see them, go during the day.) Some parts of the Mission District are not the best either, but I have never had a problem there.
When you arrive, check with your concierge or hotel proprietor and they can take care of you in that regard. They will also need to help you get oriented with the public transit system. SF is indeed a city worth visiting, but like in most cities its age and size, visitors should exercise some caution.

The drive from Monterey to San Francisco is less than three hours.
In San Francisco, I would stay in the Union Square area which has easy access to all the kinds of public transportation and good restaurants within walking distance. Also walking distance from Chinatown and North Beach, and even the Embarcadero if you are good walkers.
Thanks for the help. How far is it from Hearst Castle to SF?
It is about 90 miles from San Simeon to Monterey and 120 from Monterey to San Francisco.
That is the mileage from San Simeon to Monterey on the coast.
Were you planning to go to San Simeon on the coast and return the same way? The alternative would be to take Highway 101 in one direction and Highway 1 the other. Highway 101 is inland, and faster, of course. You are undoubtedly going to want to take your time on the Monterey San Simeon leg on the coast as the scenery is outstanding and there are places to stop.
The mileage between San Simeon and Montery using 101 is about 105 miles.
If you take Highway 101 you would travel between Highways 1 and 101 on Highway 46 from a little south of Cambria to Paso Robles. This is 12 miles south of San Simeon.
How confusing is all of that? :~)
