Stay at Lone Pine, at the foot of Mt. Whitney. Movies were made around here...I am not sure, but someone here can tell you. It is very pretty there.

Doing this trip too and was going to stay in Bishop overnight.

Is Lone Pine a nicer place to stay overnight?

Lone Pine is smaller and has only a few hotels. It will reduce your driving time the next day to Las Vegas by 60 miles. Bishop has many hotels and restaurants. If time isn%26#39;t a concern, then Bishop is probably a better choice.

Either Bishop or Lone Pine would be fine; they have the most visitor services of all the towns along the eastern Sierra. Bishop is bigger and has more businesses, a golf course, and a private hot springs recreational spot just south (Keough Hot Springs)

I personally like Lone Pine because it%26#39;s smaller and cozier. If you want to stay in a VERY small, VERY cozy town, Big Pine and Independence are nice. After Lone Pine, there is nothing until Death Valley National Park (Panamint Springs, Stove Pipe Wells, and Furnace Creek, in that order).

As Puter said, Lone Pine is at the foot of Mt. Whitney. You can drive up into the foothills to a place called Alabama Hills, where a lot of the old Western and adventure pictures were filmed. Lone Pine is the gateway town to Death Valley as well as Mt. Whitney, so you weren%26#39;t thinking of passing up the chance to enjoy it, were you?

Lone Pine has a couple of chain motels (Best Western and I can%26#39;t recall what else), and several small independents. I like the Dow Villa, which has a historic hotel as well as a modern motel. The historic hotel dates from the 1930s movie heyday and the rooms are done in that period. The lobby has an exhibit of movie memorabilia that you can see it even if you stay elsewhere. Lone Pine has plentiful restaurants, shopping, fuel, and a fine visitor center just outside town on the road to Death Valley.

Check the Lone Pine, Death Valley, and DV National Park forums for more ideas.

We have stayed in three hotels in Lone Pine and one in Bishop. In Lone Pine we liked the Dow Villa and also the Best Western was good. The Alabama Hills Inn was basic but with the most amazing views at the backside of the hotel. In Bishop it was Best Western Creekside Inn. Easily the best but also the most expensive but if you want to splurge, this is the place. Get yourself a room with a patio along the creek! BTW, I just noticed the Alabama Hills Inn is now a Comfort Inn. It%26#39;s just before the exit to Death Valley. If you stay in Lone Pine make sure you%26#39;ll visit the excellent visitor center at the 395/136 junction and after taking 136 to DV stop after 5 miles or so. Pull over and make some terrific photos of the Sierras, Alabama Hills and Mount Whitney!!!
