First time holiday to california

Hi, We are an Irish family travelling to California for the first time in June. We would be really grateful for advise regarding things to do and see during our two week stay. We are flying in and out of San Francisco. We hace three teenage boys so variety and action are essential. We were wondering about where would be good to stay in San Francisco and where we could move to after a few days. Any help would be wonderful,

Catherine

The TouringSFO site was created just for you Catherine. It%26#39;s at http://geocities.com/touringsfo/ You%26#39;ll find answers to your general questions that will allow you to better ask for specific information at this site.

KathIreland, a heads up that you are posted on the Yosemite forum. It is within California, but you%26#39;ll probably get a better range of answers by posting either on the SF forum or the general California forum. You may actually want to post in both places.

Personally I would recommend exploring SF including the typical sights like Alcatraz, Chinatown, GG Bridge, Pier 39, and other parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation area. You could easily fill up 2 days doing that. I would also take in some of the area within an hour or two drive from SF like Muir Woods, Point Reyes, and/or Stinson Beach.

I%26#39;d also focus some on the Big Sur/Monterey/Carmel area. There you can hit up the Monterey Bay Aquarium, rent bikes and ride along the ocean on a flat bikepath, in Carmel there are nice (though expensive shops), Big Sur there%26#39;s great hiking/redwood forests. You could again easily spend 2 days in this area.

Yosemite, obviously, you could spend 2 to 3 days here. You can go biking, rafting, horseback riding, hiking, touring in the Park. The issue is going to be booking lodging as things can fill a year in advance. There are frequently cancellations though. For convenience, I would spend one or two nights in Yosemite Valley if you can get accommodations (www.yosemitepark.com, Curry Village or Yosemite Lodge at the Falls, or the Ahwahnnee...very high end). Your next closest lodging would be in the town of El Portal...30 minute-ish drive from the main part of Yosemite Valley. Try and book this lodging asap though, as the lodging possibilities are limited as compared to some of your other areas.

Have fun whatever you decide to do!

Hello and welcome to the travle forums! I like the idea of spending time in the Carmel/Monterey area. The Monterey Beach Resort is a nice hotel for a family, it is located right on the ocean and pretty reasonably priced, it is a Best Western. Definitely visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, check out Pt. Lobos State Reserve, the Carmel Mission and 17 Mile Drive. Enjoy your trip! :)
