We have a stopover in LA: one full day plus one night.
We%26#39;d like to stay in an area not too far from LAX. We *don%26#39;t* want to rent a car or take lots of taxis. We want to walk around and do lots of shopping (on foot).
Are there any nice walking neighbourhoods with mid-priced shops?
One full day only - walkable shopping areas?
Santa Monica is 15 to 20 minutes north of LAX. In the downtown section is the Third Street Promenade -- mostly, well-known chain stores. Further south along Abbot Kinney Bl are boutique-type shopping. The two areas are connected by public transit (about 10 minutes apart).
Santa Monica is a pricey part of the L.A. metro area, however. Take a look at hotels here:

(Link and scroll down to the %26#39;recommended hotels%26#39;. There are some less expensive ones in the list).
Alternatively, you could stay south of LAX in nearby El Segundo. Most of these hotels have free airport shuttles. Here%26#39;s a list of El Segundo hotels:

Within 5 or 10 minutes of the El Segundo hotels are 2 medium-size outdoor shopping centers, Manhattan Village (http://www.shopmanhattanvillage.com/ ) and Plaza El Segundo ( http://www.plazaelsegundo.com/ ). You can also take a taxi or buses (2) into downtown Manhattan Beach -- 10 to 15 minutes from most El Segundo hotels for ';small shop'; shopping along the Manhattan Beach Bl area near the pier.
Good luck!
One full day only - walkable shopping areas?Santa Monica (15-20 mins away) is your best option. What is the price range for your hotel as this area is one of the pricier ones. Santa Monica Promenade has lots of chain store shopping, Main St and Montana Ave have boutique shopping. There are also boutiques at Abbot Kinney in Venice nearby.
Thanks for the answers, I guess Santa Monica it is!
