We are going for one day to universal Studios at end of June with two kids - is the front of the line pass worth the extra expense?

You do not have to buy the pass straightaway. If its busy and the lines are long, buy them later from customer services.
I expect that if you go on a weekday, it should not be that busy.

I dont think it is worth the extra $ really unless you under some sort of time restraint.
Save the $ and use it for a nice dinner instead
