Hi! I%26#39;m looking for some advice on where to go for a surprise romantic getaway in Cali with my boyfriend. It will probably be in autumn. (No winery stuff, though; we%26#39;re not too interested.)
I%26#39;m looking for a nice (4-5 star) hotel to stay in, and possibly a great spa in or nearby so we can relax. Location is also a plus! So far I%26#39;ve considered the Four Seasons Aviara and Palo Alto, and both look great. But I%26#39;m also open to other suggestions, since I know so little about Cali.
Also recommendations of other things to do, nice restaurants, etc.!
Thanks!
Romantic getaway ideas?(Actually, if you call our state ';Cali'; you have already turned off a whole bunch of people who might have responded.)
That said...this is a huge state.
Recommend that you get a good guide book, with maps, and do some research and then come back with questions.
Romantic getaway ideas? If that%26#39;s true, that says something rather negative about the residents there, don%26#39;t you think?
Excuse me, but I%26#39;m from Arizona, and it%26#39;s a casual and common abbreviation here.
Please don%26#39;t treat me like I%26#39;m stupid; I%26#39;ve visited many times. I%26#39;m merely asking for suggestions. I don%26#39;t know how else to narrow it down, aside from that I might prefer southern California (oops, almost said So-Cal, oh no) to northern.
Hello and welcome to the travel forums! You may want to consider Laguna Beach, the Montage is a gorgeous resort with a nice spa. This past December we stayed 3 nights at the Casa Laguna Inn which was quaint and very romantic for our anniversary celebration. :)
Thank you, that sounds lovely! I%26#39;ll be sure to do some research and see how it looks :)
OK, now that we have had THAT conversation....
here is what you said

California is very long and pretty wide and includes much diversity of landscape from oceanfront to central valley to Sierra mountains to desert. In the north we have the magnificent redwood forests, and the wild Sonoma Coast. Then comes the wine region, which you said you were not interested in, so OK. Still going down the coast you come to San Francisco, worth quite a few days. Then there is the Monterey Bay area, to include Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove. From here you can drive down the incredible coast highway through Big Sur. And then there are the beach towns below that and charming Santa Barbara and on into Southern California to include more beaches and Hollywood and Disneyland, etc. South of that is San Diego with its world famous zoo and Sea Life and more good beaches. East of that is Palm Springs, if you like desert country. It gets hot there in the summer, but autumn might be nice and I am sure that they have great spas.
Now, let%26#39;s backtrack a little. There is Yosemite of course, and below that both Sequoia National Park with the sequoia trees, larger in girth than the coast redwoods, but not as tall, eventually.
And Lake Tahoe.
Oh, dear, we have not mentioned the Napa Valley. I know you are not interested in wine, but that is where you will find some great spas.
So, you see, it is extremely difficult for us to recommend one place which fits your needs.
However, if I had to choose I would suggest that you get over your aversion to wine and try something like Auberge in the Napa Valley. Or google the Valley. There are great places there. (They will not make you drink wine or visit a vineyard.)
Palo Alto is a drive from San Francisco, but not an interesting location at all, unless you want to visit Stanford University and like peninsula towns.
OR..google some of the locations I have given you and see what YOU think.
';Nice restaurants'; recommendations are a little premature at this point. When you decide where to stay, ask again.
I hope that this was somewhat helpful and you are not still put off by my correction about terms. It may be cool to call it ';Cali'; in Arizona but it definitely will put off the locals. A word to the wise.
I hope the trip comes off well for you. Good luck.
Check out the Laguna Beach dot com website for your research, we booked both the Montage %26amp; the Casa Laguan Inn on this site. :)
I, as always, want to recommend San Diego.
Try the Hotel Del Coronado...I think you%26#39;ll like it!
