Hi,
Just been reading the tips on driving to Yosemite when Tioga Pass is closed.
We will be leaving Las Vegas on the 6th May and were planning to drive directly to Yosemite where we will camp - unknown where yet as we need to still book this. Prefer to be in a camp with facilities.
As this road is closed we will take the longer northern route and stay one night in either Death Valley or one of the lakes. What%26#39;s your advice?
We won%26#39;t be camping and would like somewhere that is nice, great lodge feel.
Think my preference would be one on the lakes. Don%26#39;t know which one is more scenic as would like this.
Thanks in advance.
Steve
Lake Tahoe or Death Valley on the way to Yosemite
I would try to get as far north as you feel comfortable driving in a single day. Tahoe to Yosemite via the western route, 49 heading south is 4.5-5 hours. Las Vegas to S. Lake Tahoe is about 7 hours. You might look at June Lake for a stop or Bridgeport. One is just under, the other just over half way.
The cut across route that we like the best is 88, not as much traffic, fewer towns to slow down at and georgeous scenery. This will also be the shortest, as you don%26#39;t have to drive as far as Lake Tahoe.
Have a fantastic trip!
Lake Tahoe or Death Valley on the way to Yosemite
It%26#39;s so tricky fitting in everything you want to see within a short timespan!
I don%26#39;t know if it helps you, but we%26#39;ve decided to forego Death Valley and fly from Las Vegas to Fresno which is only a couple of hours drive from Yosemite.
I know there will be lots of people who don%26#39;t agree, but this works out the best for our short time there - I suppose it depends on how long you want to spend travelling/driving.
