We would like to spend an afternoon at a beach near disneyland. How long of a drive is it and how would you recommend getting there. What beach would you recommend for a family boys ages 8 %26amp; 6?

Huntington Beach is a great beach, very close by. The absolute easiest way to get there is to drive west from Harbour Blvd on any major road, to Beach Blvd. Take Beach Blvd south, all the way to the parking lot for Huntington Beach. It will be about a 20 to 30 minute drive, depending on traffic.

So this is a beach you can laze around on and go into the water? Is it crowded or just enough people. We are going at the end of April early May, is it practical to be at the beach during these months? And how would you recommend getting there, as we are staying close to Disney with no vehicle?
If you are not going to rent a car, you may want to go on the following tour.

It goes to different beaches and you have a choice to get off and back on at three stops (I think it is three). I would highly recommend stopping at Main Beach in Laguna. You kids would also like Balboa (Fun Zone).
Yes, almost all beaches here are public and you can laze around and go into the water. The water temps are cold in April and May. Weather can be unpridictable during that time. It could rain, or it could be pretty warm during the day. Nights are typically cooler than days and we sometimes get foggy or gray mornings along the coast in May.
Oh, and to answer your question about crowds: Unless it is a holiday weekend or very warm inland, like if we had a ';heat wave'; it should not be crowded at the beaches during that time. And most beaches are long with plenty of room to spread out. Huntington, Balboa, Newport are examples of that. Laguna%26#39;s Main Beach is not very long, but it is beautiful.
Another option, use public transit.
Take the OCTA Route 43 south on Harbor to the end of the route in Costa Mesa. Transfer to the 71, which will take you to Newport Beach and the Balboa Pier area.
It is about a 90 minute trip each way, and the cost is $3 round trip (buy the Day Pass from the Bus Driver).
What kind of sharks does California have around Laguna %26amp; Huntington beach? Not that they freak me out - use to the reef %26amp; black tips in the Bahamas.
Just curious - any great whites?
There are no sharks in the waters anywhere near the So. Cal beaches. You will need to go to the Long Beach Aquarium to see sharks. There also may be some on exhibit in Sea World in San Diego. There are beaches where you can visit tidepools, areas along the beach that form a little natural collection of water where you will see some small forms of sea life at high tide. Laguna has a beach with a tidepool and so does La Jolla, which is in the north section of San Diego. La Jolla also has a beach the seals took over. They just like to hang out there. It was originally a little beach set aside for children and it is still called Children%26#39;s Beach even though no one can swim there. People like to go there to see the seals though.
If you take a boat to Catalina Island, 26 miles from mainland So. California, you will probably see some dolphins swimming out in the ocean. We also have whale watching boats, but I don%26#39;t know the best time of year to go out on one of those.
