Living on the east coast, we think nothing of driving up or down the coast 200 miles or so and back in a day...it%26#39;s all flat. Are we nuts to think that on our 5 day visit to San Francisco in June we could take a day trip to Lake Tahoe? How about a day trip to Humboldt State Park? What%26#39;s the driving like? Thanks for any advice!
Day Trips from SF
Those two locations are really too far for day trips. Yosemite is a four hour drive one way, and while I don%26#39;t have my maps with me I believe that Humboldt is about that far. The roads are fine, you just wouldn%26#39;t have time to see anything.
Day Trips from SF
I live in Humboldt and it is a pretty far drive from San Fran...about 5-6 hours depending on traffic. I definitely recommend that you come visit though! We are actually heading down to San Fran over President%26#39;s Wkend and are planning on leaving around 6-7am to get to San Fran at a decent time.
Are you thinking of Humboldt State Park for the redwoods? It really is too far for a day trip, as it is about 5 hours one-way.

Big redwoods much closer to SF! You could make a very nice day trip - go north on 101, then return on Hwy 1, maybe also seeing Point Reyes Nat%26#39;l Seashore.
Yes, Armstrong Grove Redwoods State Park is a good day trip.
Take Hwy 101 north to Santa Rosa and then take the River Road exit. This takes you down the Russian River to Guerneville, where the park is.
After your visit continue toward the coast on Hwy 116 and turn south, crossing the River when it hits Hwy 1. This takes you past 10 miles of State Beaches to Bodega Bay, a fishing village and vacation spot.
Then you can continue south on Highway 1, past the aforementioned Point Reyes National Seashore, which you may wish to visit. Then on to the Golden Gate Bridge.
There is a redwood stand, Muir Woods, off this road, but Armstrong Grove is much larger and you won%26#39;t run into crowds or tour buses as you will at Muir.
Incidentally, while you are in the Russian River area you will find quite a few wineries.
Better get to Armstrong before Ahnold shuts it down:

wm - I have driven to Tahoe from San Francisco and back in a day many times, but always to visit someone for a specific event or pick someone up. Sure you can do it, but I probably wouldn%26#39;t choose to do that on vacation. There is so much to see, it deserves at least one overnight (there are less expensive motels on the Nevada side of the border). In June there is no weather worry, so it CAN be done.
Armstrong Grove Redwoods sounds like a good option for us. I appreciate all the info about Humboldt and agree it%26#39;s too far. Armstrong sounds like what we would like to see and the other places of interests nearby should make for a lovely day trip. As for Tahoe, my 20 year old really wants to see it, so I think we shall go for an overnight. Thank you all so much for your helpful advice. Hope you%26#39;ll make it to Williamsburg, VA some day!
Maybe Forestvillian could suggest a winery or two, if that interests you, which you could visit while on the Armstrong Grove trip.
We had a taco for lunch today in Forestville and I kept looking for her, but no luck %26lt;grin%26gt;.
